he wrote a lovely book about the history and development of a few of theworld’s greatest cities called ‘the city in mind’… and lately he’s writing a funny and caustic blog i subscribe to called ‘clusterfuck nation. for example, he saw the financial collapse we are living through now, in 2002. he is a smart thinker and predictor of things that come true. he has written a great book called ‘the long emergency’ about what our world will look like in ten years. If you are not already aware of the writings of james howard kunstler please look him up. i wish i could say i felt hopeful for us all, but i can’t. The luxury was psychological and emotional: to be unplugged and away from the ‘regular’ day to have time with dave just to be to get away from the stupidity and spectacle of navel gazing american complacency, greed and waste and see how some of the rest of the world lives. we do have a private compartment with a door that shuts when we want it to. course i’ll concede that the train isn’t all that full. with the exception of the two very interesting Swedish gentlemen in the neighboring compartment, one’s an aging communist and the other a forensic psychiatrist, we are by about 10 years, the oldest people on the train. it has been an education and it has been relaxing being on the train and i have loved every single second of it, and my life is changing as a result- all positives -BUT the accomodations are not approaching luxurious aboard this train. To those of you out there who might think this a luxurious vacation, you stand corrected as of now. a few jars of pickles – yum – but nothing else save for the most surly cashiers behind the plate glass shop windows begrudgingly ashing their cigs while fetching your wares. ulanudestation but the rest of the stops ( and there were 32 in russia ) had packaged cookies and day old baked goods. a couple of notable exceptions were when we were at lake Baikal and got the amazing local freshly smoked fish and home made pirogies.
